Each of the Flowering Crab Apples listed has qualities which make it worthy of inclusion. Some are grown for leaf colour and some are grown for their striking or long lasting fruits remaining well into winter. Many compliment each other. AGM means this variety has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Malus 'ADMIRATION' (aka 'Adirondack')

Slow growing for limited space. Masses of pink/white opening to white flowers followed by long lasting maturing to glowing pink fruits. Malus 'Admiration' 29th April. Right 19th August.

Malus 'BUTTERBALL'

Fruits similar to 'Golden Hornet'. Long lasting yellow fruits and healthy foliage. It deserves more recognition. A larger tree than 'Golden Hornet'. Image Malus 'Butterball' 17th October. AGM.

Malus 'COMTESSE DE PARIS'

Beautiful soft yellow elliptical crab apples persist to end of December. Dazzling white flower in May. Image left Malus 'Comtessa de Paris' 21st May. Right 19th October. AGM.

Malus 'EVERESTE'

Beautiful compact tree with pink / white flowers and peach coloured fruits. Excellent. Image Malus 'Evereste' 9th May. Right 16th December. Right 11th October. AGM.

Malus 'GOLDEN HORNET'

Large yellow fruits lasting into Winter. Plant with 'Red Sentinel' for winter effect. The most popular of the yellow crab apples. Image Malus 'Golden Hornet' 7th October

Malus 'GORGEOUS'

Long, deep green leaf. Bright red fruits a little like 'Red Sentinel' but larger. It is very resistant to scab. A very good choice. Image Malus 'Gorgeous' 16th October.

Malus 'HARRY BAKER'

Dark pink flowers followed by ruby red fruits this new variety has good disease resistance. Image Malus 'Harry Baker' 21st April. Right 17th August.

Malus 'JOHN DOWNIE'

Bright orange and red fruits up to 1" across make this an all time favourite. The variety favoured for making crab apple jelly. Image Malus 'John Downie' 21st August

Malus 'LAURA'

A naturally extremely dwarfing variety. Pink and white flowers followed by red fruits in Autumn. Can be grown in pots. AGM. Image left  Malus 'Laura' 2nd May. Right 17th August. 

Malus 'MOLTEN LAVA'

Pink tinged white flowers. Small red fruits lasting into winter. Very compact weeping/spreading habit   Image Malus 'Molten Lava' 28th April. Right 11th October

Malus 'MONTREAL BEAUTY'

Much larger more rounded fruits than 'John Downie' with similar colouring. A more vigorous tree. Image left Malus 'Montreal Beauty' 21st April. Right 26th August.

Malus 'RED JADE'

A weeping tree. Masses of white flowers tumble to the ground. Red fruits hang in bunches. Trim into a lovely 'umbrella' shape. Image left Malus 'Red Jade' 4th May. Right 17th August

Malus 'RED SENTINEL'

Large clusters of deep red fruits lasting into winter. Image Malus 'Red Sentinel' 19th October. AGM.

Malus 'ROYALTY'

The deepest crimson red leaf of all. A naturally small tree with a neat, compact habit. When well grown a striking colour. Image Malus 'Royalty' 4th May. Right 20th September.

Malus 'RUDOLPH'

Another one of my favourites. Red/bronze leaves, large rose red flowers and orange/yellow fruits lasting into Autumn. Always popular. Image Malus 'Rudolph' 5th May. Right - 17th August.

Malus 'SCARLETT'

Vivid purple leaves turning to dark green in summer. Rich pink flowers. Disease resistant. A personal favourite. Image Malus 'Scarlett' 17th May. Right 20th Sept'

Malus 'SNOW CLOUD'

Narrow columnar grower with dark green foliage. Fantastic show of double white flowers in April. Yellow fruit in the Autumn.  Image Malus 'Snow Cloud' 21st April  

Malus 'SUN RIVAL'

Weeping. Disease free. Superb pink to white flowers. Small orange coloured fruit. A graceful, small weeping tree. Image Malus 'Sun Rival' 30th April . Right 11th October.

Malus 'TORINGOIDES'

Deeply cut dainty leaves. Later flowering in May. Clusters of bright white flowers. Red/yellow fruit ripening bright scarlet. Image Malus 'Toringoides' 21st May. Right 30th July.

Malus 'TSCHONOSKII'

The 'BONFIRE TREE', so named because of its striking autumnal tints. Has a downy grey leaf. Spring interest. Image Malus 'Tschonoskii' 2nd May

Malus 'VAN ESELTINE'

A small, columnar tree. Predominately pink, clouded white flowers in May precede red/yellow fruits. Beautiful flower. Image Malus 'Van Eseltine' 2nd May. Right 22nd September.

Malus 'WEDDING BOUQUET' (Brevipes)

Flowering in May. Pink buds opening to shell shaped white flowers then clusters of small red fruits lasting to December.   Image Malus 'Wedding Bouquet' 18th May. Right 6th Sept'. AGM.

 

The Sorbus' are sometimes underrated. All of the varieties listed offer appealing characteristics. They offer something of interest from early Spring when the buds start to show until the Autumn when their flame red and orange tints are displayed.

Sorbus 'AUTUMN SPIRE'

A new variety. Compact habit with red and purple autumn colour. Bunches or yellow and orange berries. Image left Sorbus Autumn Spire 18th October.

Sorbus 'ARIA LUTESCENS'

Beautiful medium sized silver grey tree with large leaves. Striking as leaves unfurl in spring. Medium sized tree.

Sorbus 'ASPLENIFOLIA'

Sorbus 'CASHMIRIANA'

Sorbus 'CHAMOIS GLOW'

Delicate dissected leaf. Red fruits. Autumn colour. Small sized tree.

Sorbus 'DISCOLOR' or 'EMBLEY'

Sorbus 'HUPEHENSIS'

Sorbus 'JOSEPH ROCK'

Sorbus 'LEONARD MESSEL'

Distinctive large leaves with multiple leaflets. Bright pink berries hang in clusters followed by superb autumn colour. Small sized tree. Image Sorbus 'Leonard Messel' 4th September.

Sorbus 'MAGNIFICA'

Dark green, elongated leaf. Worthwhile and unusual. Medium. Image Sorbus Magnifica taken 7th September.

Sorbus 'MITCHELLII'

Very large round, grey leaves. Outstanding variety. Medium. Also know as thibetica 'John Mitchell'.

Sorbus 'PEARLY KING'

Sorbus 'PINK PAGODA'

Sorbus 'SARGENTIANA'

Connoisseur's choice. Crimson, sticky buds, large leaves and rich autumn colour make it unusual. Small sized tree.

Sorbus 'SCALARIS'

Very small tree. Many glossy green leaflets. Autumn colour. Fruits are small and red. Introduced 1904. Small sized tree.
